The Caxton Youth Theatre has made a good name for itself in recent years with a string of impressive shows. The latest, Time Flies, is set to keep the reputation very much alive, with an exciting production of six separate plays performed in one evening.
Every play is a small work of genius from the hand of master American author David Ives. Each short play has had a different young director, some have experience and for some it is their first time, but all the youth members in the production team of 14 teenagers have certainly been giving Ives their own personal touch.
Some newer faces join young Caxton regulars on the Novartis Stage at the Caxton Theatre and the evening will see performances from Sylvia Hunter, Gemma Quickfall, Amy Burrows, Charlotte Fell, Danny McCallum, Tim Henton, Heather Pearson, Anja Waszczyszyn, Dani Bolton, Steph Wood, Tom Finch, Hannah Ramsden, Rachelle White, Ben Evardson, Adam Powell, Alanagh Lawlor and Gemma Clark.
Experienced Caxton directors Emma Nicholson, Scott Middleton and Sue Goodfield have guided along the young people. Sue said: "We haven't really had to give them much guidance at all, although they were quite nervous at first as directing and working behind the scenes is new to some of them. It took a couple of rehearsals for them to realise how big a task it would be, but watching them all pull together as a team is fantastic, they all work really well together. It has definitely been an interesting project and the result will be great fun and full of laughs."
David Ives plays are well known for their surreal comedy and the group has certainly added an extra spin on some of the performances. In the set of six plays, you will meet two mayflies in love, a snobby washing machine, a rather scary nurse named Fifi, a world where everything is opposite and a parallel universe. That's not to mention a possessed television set and various other bizarre characters.
